It’s just pressure
Thanks to Multivac’s new HPP technology, integrated high-pressure preservation is now available for MAP packed food items to extend their shelf life without heat, radiation or artificial additives. Up to 6000 bar rids the treated food of harmful microorganisms without affecting its nutritional value. Stefan Richter reports. When Sepp Haggenmüller and his friend Artur Vetter built their first vacuum chamber machine in a garage in 1961, they named it Multivac.

How is your grease doing?
Grease operating life is the decisive factor in maintenance. A new grease sensor incorporating an electronic evaluation system enables the condition of grease in bearings to be analysed during operation. Users now have the ability to precisely plan the schedule for replacing grease and to detect any changes in the condition of the grease long before any damage to the rolling bearing occurs.

The importance of talking heat treatment
Heat treatment is simply a function of ingredients, temperature, and time and therefore the outcome is pretty predictable. But sometimes it’s just not that easy. Barry Robinson shares what happened when he was approached by MOTAT to rectify a minor problem with their new tram wheels. Everyone seems to know that if you heat a piece of steel to “cherry red” and quench it in water it will come out hard.

Fresh on the table with automation technology
Processed food often has to travel a long way before it reaches the safety of a home refrigerator – a journey which involves numerous risks of contamination or microbial attached, such as salmonella or listeria. To prevent this from happening, machine and installation builders equip their processing filling machines with hygienic automation technology. Consumers are looking for reliable quality when they buy their groceries. Hygienic manufacturing, filling and packaging in the food industry ensures first-class products.

Specialty conveying systems increase operational efficiency
Mercer Stainless has been well known in the New Zealand food industry for many years as a quality supplier of tanks, silos and pressure vessels. What is less well known is that within the team, there is also a group of experienced engineers capable of designing and building conveying equipment including spiral coolers and freezers. Spiral coolers and freezers are typically used in the food industry for efficient cooling when there is limited floor space and to maximise heat transfer.

Mounting bearings: Do it once, do it properly
How you mount your bearings will determine the life and performance of the bearings in the long term. Proper bearing handling and mounting methods will prevent you from unplanned shutdowns and bearing failure that would cost you thousands of dollars. Cleanliness: The first rule Cleanliness is the first rule of proper bearing handling. Whenever possible, keep the working environment clear of sand, sawdust, cement, corrosive substances, and high humidity.

Saving makes business sense
Saving energy is not just about social responsibility. It is also a powerful tool to contain costs, as many New Zealand companies have found out. Jenny Baker reports. The Government recently released its New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy 2011 to 2016. In launching the strategy, Acting Minister of Energy and Resources Hekia Parata said it promoted practical actions to encourage energy consumers to make wise decisions.

Part one of a two-part series in which MESNZ secretary Craig Carlyle shares his views on the supply of tradesmen and training of apprentices in New Zealand, based on the Society’s survey results. Regular readers of this magazine will be aware that the Maintenance Engineering Society (MESNZ) has given itself the task of discovering what is happening with the supply of tradesmen and training of apprentices in New Zealand. Focused by continuing unrest in the media, our epiphany was to look for solutions rather than simply add our grumbles to the debate.

The power of purpose
One of the most extraordinary programmes to facilitate and manage young school leavers into trade apprenticeships has been quietly gaining momentum in South Auckland over the past three years. Editor Glenn Baker talks to Trades At School founder and CEO John Kotoisuva. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that there has long been a problem getting young school leavers to focus on trades careers after high school, or to recognise a tangible purpose for their high school education.

Good maintenance is all about TLC
WHEN I say ‘good maintenance is all about TLC’ I’m not talking about the kind of TLC that your ‘significant other’ insists on from time to time. It’s much easier to define what is needed to satisfy the TLC requirements of plant and equipment. It comes down to Tightness, Lubrication and Cleaning – if we could get those three basic components of maintenance right we could easily halve equipment failures.

THERE are many components to an effective CNC machining process for fabrication shops. While a high-quality CNC machine is an important factor for the efficient machining of quality products, a good automatic tool pathing software package is equally as important and sets you apart from the competition by improving your product quality and value. No matter how sophisticated a CNC machine is, it can’t do anything without a tool and a tool path.
