EECA updates Energy End Use database

Energy Efficiency

The update shows promising trends for New Zealand’s low emissions journey for industrial stationary energy.

The EEUD tool provides annual estimates of how energy is used across the economy. The new dataset covers January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2022.

Insight highlights include:

•             A clear decrease in coal and fossil gas use within the dairy products sector.

•             Significant dips in coal and fossil gas use in 2022 for the meat products sector, with an increase in electricity.

•             An increase in renewables and a decrease in fossil fuel use from 2021 to 2022 for the industrial sector overall.

Process heat and boiler systems continue to be the primary end uses and technology dominating business stationary energy consumption.

It’s heartening to see that energy efficiency and decarbonisation efforts across industry are having an impact. And with so many more fuel switching projects commissioned over 2023 and into 2024, we expect that these trends will continue.

Our Sector Decarbonisation Programme can help businesses throughout their journey to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. The most recent additions to the programme are a tailored 5-step pathway for manufacturing businesses, and a pilot project offering support to dairy farmers.

Find out more about these initiatives below, and be sure to scroll down to our Spotlight on energy projects section, for inspiration from businesses that are leading the way with clean and clever energy.

The Energy End Use Database is ideal for government and industry – breaking down high-level data into specific applications, paving the way for smarter energy insights. It allows researchers, policy makers and members of the public to explore and identify energy insights from around New Zealand.

The interactive tool is available as an online data visualisation application showcasing results with a user-friendly interactive interface. The dataset is also available as a downloadable spreadsheet.
