Land has launched an industry-leading version of their Gold Cup Probe designed to address challenges in measuring tube temperatures inside compact or uniquely shaped heaters and furnaces. The new Modular Gold Cup Probe offers flexibility and portability, making accurate temperature measurements easier across a wide range of applications.
This innovation from Land is an evolution of their existing Gold Cup Probe, for detecting true tube temperature measurements in furnaces. The Modular Gold Cup provides precise information on emissivity by giving true tube temperature, so operators can perform in-furnace verification as a reference for other instruments, such as thermal imagers.
The idea for a modular solution emerged after Becht shared an issue they were facing with the traditional straight Gold Cup when using it on smaller fired heaters. Jason Rushton, Application Engineer at Land, led the development of a solution that enabled the Gold Cup Probe to be used on heaters that were small or uniquely shaped.
The resulting Modular Gold Cup Probe is an industry-first piece of equipment, designed using Land’s tried and tested technology but in a modular probe, creating a unique solution that can be tailored for use. This enables customers to configure the probe to meet their needs for full adaptability and saves the customer from having to buy multiple probes for different heater types.
Jason said, “We first looked at developing a fixed right-angled head or shepherd’s hook. When exploring these options, we came up with the idea of making it modular, so customers can build whatever shape suits their particular furnace.”
“We faced some challenges designing a modular, lightweight solution that maintained measurement accuracy under extreme conditions,” said Jason Rushton. “After early prototypes were unsuccessful, we re-engineered the cooling system to use air instead of water, which helped reduce weight and increased usability for the customer.”
The Modular Gold Cup works in the same way as the traditional Gold Cup Thermometer, using internal reflection to capture highly accurate temperature readings from the furnace tubes. Like the traditional probe, this solution enables non-intrusive, live temperature verification through a furnace peep door.
A Gold Cup Probe allows this to be done without shutdowns or intrusive stops by entering through a peep door, connecting with the tube wall, and blocking incident radiation energy. In doing this, it delivers accurate, reliable, and repeatable data, with an assumed emissivity of 1.00, allowing a perfect reference measurement, giving users confidence in their data under real operating conditions.
However, this evolved version offers two unique benefits.
First, is the ability to adapt the structure of the probe to meet the customers’ needs, building different shapes to suit different heaters. This is enhanced by the ability to choose the length of the probe up to 3.0 meters (depending on variant used), which makes accessing and measuring smaller furnaces easier.
The second benefit is its portability. Users can easily move it from site to site as it can be deconstructed and packed away in a much smaller case. This means it can be transported on commercial airlines or trains and easily moved from one location to another.
