Shipping complete wind turbines

Sustainability

Swire Projects, the projects and heavy lift shipping services division of Swire Shipping, has successfully delivered a complete set of wind turbines from China to Bluff, New Zealand, for one of the world’s leading wind energy companies, Vestas.

The wind energy cargo is intended for the Kaiwera Downs Wind Farm (Stage 1), which is being completed near the town of Gore in the South Island of New Zealand. It consists of a total of 10 V136 Vestas wind turbines.

In deploying its newly chartered vessel, Pacific Humility, for the transportation of this project shipment, Swire Projects was able to provide an efficient solution and ensured that all 10 wind turbines were loaded on one vessel in a single shipment.

One of three H-Class (28,500 DWT) vessels in Swire Projects’ fleet, Pacific Humility is very versatile. With three cranes of sufficient lifting strength, loading and discharge can be done efficiently, while having two or three decks to utilise allows stowage optimisation and makes it ideal for the shipment of wind turbines and other project cargoes. Complementing the dedicated planning and execution capabilities of the Swire Projects team, this showcases Swire Projects’ capability to seamlessly handle large and complex cargo requirements.

Namir Khanbabi, General Manager at Swire Projects, expressed his satisfaction with the success of this project, stating: "We are proud to have played a key role in this significant milestone project for the renewable energy industry in New Zealand and to deliver the full set of wind turbines on time and with the highest standards of safety and quality. This achievement is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our team within Swire Projects and the Swire Shipping network, who worked tirelessly to ensure the cargo's safe delivery."
