Technology in maintenance

Maintenance Matters

Technology is being developed at an extremely fast pace and maintenance practices  are improving through technology and connectivity. Planning based around fixed time replacements, or preventative maintenance, has been the most common maintenance practice, using calendar based timing intervals. It has been well documented for many years that the most cost effective maintenance strategy is a predominantly condition based one.
Preventative Maintenance at first glance appears simple. The likelihood of over or under maintaining equipment tends to be high as it doesn’t consider unique differences of the equipment. It is also very intrusive and a PM task can often leave an asset in a worse condition than before the task was performed. Condition-based or predictive maintenance tools are available in a variety of deigns from basic tools through to advanced online systems.
Abnormal vibrations and unexpected temperature change are often the first indicators of faults that can lead to a potential failure. Vibrations can be caused by unbalance, misalignment, looseness of parts, or deteriorating rolling bearings. Vibration analysis instruments and systems can help detect many serious problems at an early stage, allowing personnel to undertake remedial work in a timely manner.

SKF QuickCollect
With SKF QuickCollect it is now possible for anyone to monitor machine health without the need for extensive training or diagnostic expertise. Combining an easy-to-use sensor with a free to use mobile app, this system enables you to quickly and easily collect and share inspection, process and machine health data companywide. The QuickCollect app offers entry-level, on-the-spot analysis capability.

QuickCollect Sensor
The hazardous area certified QuickCollect sensor is a Bluetooth enabled handheld sensor that can be used as a standalone walk around tool to collect vibration and temperature data that displays on the free QuickCollect app for Android and iOS smart phones (or iWatch).
When performing measurements, the sensor input signal is processed to produce two vibration measurements for each measurement point. Velocity vibration identifies phenomena that are observable in the low to mid frequency range and indicates such structural problems as misalignment, unbalance, mechanical looseness and more. Enveloped acceleration measurements filter out general machinery noise to focus in on bearing and gear mesh vibration signals, allowing earlier problem detection.

Features
• Velocity, acceleration enveloping, and temperature measurements.
• Bluetooth communication with tablets, smart phones, smart watches.
• Easy to use sensor and apps.
• Easy to understand indications of machine condition.
• Rugged industrial design – Drop test 1,8 m, water and dust resistant (IP65).
• Suitable for use in hazardous environments (ATEX Zone 1, Class 1, Div 1).
• Rechargeable lithium battery (eight hours normal usage).

SKF DataCollect
Upgrading to the DataCollect app provides extended diagnostic capabilities and spectral vibration data with the ability to connect to SKF expert remote services. The app also includes the ability to customise forms for collecting all kinds of machine health data and visual inspections such as lubricant levels and condition, temperatures and process readings. General inspections like safety and regulatory inspections are also able to be collected through the app and instant feedback on operating conditions is able to guide users as they go about their daily tasks.
