Now that we know a great white shark is faster than Olympian Michael Phelps, let’s solve another mystery. Ever wondered what the bite force of this massive predator is? Well, Futek recently teamed up with the engineers at Peacock Productions to test just that.
Enticing the Great White to bite into this application was no easy task. But the engineers at Peacock Productions designed a test platform to accomplish this for Shark Week 2017. Their setup mounted several Futek LTH500 donut load cells into a mould that simulated a shark’s prey. When the shark bit down upon the mould, the sensors captured the force applied, and what a force that was!
How it Works:
As seen in the conceptual drawing, by using several LTH500 Donut/Through Hole Load Cells the engineers were able to measure the applied force. This output was then summed with the IAC200 Summing Junction Box and sent to the IHH500 Digital Hand Held Display where the test engineers monitored and logged all resulting data.
The results of this Shark Bite Force Measurement application were screened recently on Shark School on the Discovery Channel for Shark Week 2017.
