Responding to yesterday’s Cabinet Papers release by The Minister of Local Government, Nanaia Mahuta setting out the Government’s “road map” for decisions on the future of drinking, storm and waste water, Carly Price at The Questioning Engineer has issued the following response:
“The papers are a welcome move towards the commitment that local government and other bodies should be taking to ensure that an incident such as the Havelock North event two years ago, is not repeated.
“This event provided a sharp wake-up call for the industry, but today we are again calling for the sharing of best practice to become more efficient and accessible.
“We understand that in effect, the government is not going to commit to anything until next June, but it is imperative that the industry continues to move in the right direction towards risk-based management.
"Now, more than ever before it is essential that accurate, technical water management information is accessible for all in the industry and so we welcome any proactivity that brings New Zealand's water management in line with practices that are commonly found overseas.”
