Easy pipe routing with 3D laser scanner

General

WHEN existing industrial plants need to be modified, one major issue is the poor information and data that engineers and designers have to work with – even if information does exist, often it is
out of date.
Critical plant areas are sometimes difficult to access, making the task of obtaining and calculating measurements unsafe and slow. All this can result in time consuming investigations and sometimes costly mistakes – which can impact on the timeline and overall project budget.
However, Novamech’s Leica 3D laser scanner is able to capture your industrial plant and surrounding piping system. It captures a high resolution point cloud which allows for accurate measuring of the structures and any complex piping systems.
Novamech then uses this data to create reliable “AS Built - 3D models” and they can provide you with any structure or industrial assembly into a 3D model to help develop your asset. Novamech utilises Leica’s Cyclone software to perform the scanning and then registration (joining together of) the multiplescanner worlds or scanner setups. Then with SolidWorks pipe routing software the company designs the pipe routes and provides models. Novamech can also merge existing 3D CAD pipe routes with new designs as needed, and can accommodate other CAD formats.
Benefits of the Leica laser scanning system include:

  • It’s a highly accurate and fast way to capture the full environment.
  • There’s no need to physically measure each pipe – this reduces errors.
  • There is no need to access plant that is at height.
  • Data can be used by multiple disciplines.

The project time is compressed and overall costs reduced. Applications for the Leica system include industrial plant modifications; pipe routing; the relocation of large fabricated equipment; as-built documents; and the monitoring of structures for deformation over time.
“Our machine is very versatile and we are finding new ways to use it on a weekly basis,” says Novamech’s Nick Bush. “So if you have a question regarding a possible application please do not hesitate to call us for an informative chat. We can scan up to 300 metres, with most applications giving an accuracy of plus or
minus two millimetres.
