The New Zealand Government’s Wood Energy Strategy and Action Plan is driving a significant shift in energy production, with coal plants being converted to allow for the burning of torrefied wood pellets (a cleaner, more affordable energy source).
With a clear target – to replace up to 40% of fossil fuelled process heat by 2050 – and funding available to energy producers, the race is on to accelerate wood energy plant conversions.
“For our customers in the sector, the conversion from coal to wood pellet burning requires significant investment in equipment upgrades,” says Paul Savage, Bonfiglioli New Zealand Country Manager.
Feeder and conveyor systems are among the solutions in high demand currently, as well as shredders and crushers. “Gearboxes and motors for these applications need to be able to handle heavy loads, ensure precise and consistent control, and deliver reliable, continuous operation,” says Paul.

Designed to handle very high torque, the 3-H Series is another Bonfiglioli innovation that offers the high shock-load resistance and long operating life required in wood pellet production. “The 3-H combines the high torque density of planetary gear units with the high-speed operation of helical bevel heavy-duty products. It provides exceptional power transmission even in a compact space, thanks to its angular layout,” says Paul. Its modular design and long service intervals are also beneficial in processing environments.
