Future-proofing water infrastructure

Automation

Greater Western Water (GWW) serves Victoria. GWW faced several challenges including the need to meet stricter environmental compliance and sustainability targets. It also needed to maximise asset performance for efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining an expanding asset base to ensure reliable operation. To address these challenges, GWW turned to Ovarro’s remote telemetry solutions to assist in updating and optimising its modern operational technology (OT) system.

GWW provides a reliable water supply, managing water sustainably and optimising its extensive infrastructure network. The corporation’s key objectives included securing a reliable and safe water supply for its customer base, ensuring sustainable water management to meet future demands while optimising its network through continuous maintenance and upgrades.

To address operational challenges, GWW identified the need to replace legacy Remote Telemetry Units (RTUs) at over 100 critical sites for real-time data management and efficiency.

After consulting and evaluating modern RTUs, GWW selected Ovarro’s TBox LT2 for its value for money, protocol compliance, low power operation and easy installation. The TBox LT2, with its PLC-like functions, extensive I/O and 4G capabilities, serves as an all-in-one solution for automation and monitoring. It provides real-time data access, robust cybersecurity, seamless integration with existing systems and significant cost savings, enhancing GWW’s ability to make informed decisions based on accurate and timely information.

Real-time monitoring capabilities

Ovarro’s TBox LT2 has proven successful for GWW, being easy to configure and deploy with built-in programming shortcuts for a secure and reliable connection to assets. As of June 2024, ten pilot sites were converted and tested that will lead to a rollout of 30 additional sites.

Despite the complexity of replacing legacy RTUs across a large network, the TBox LT2 was instrumental during the implementation, testing and monitoring phases. The RTUs’ real-time monitoring capabilities provided comprehensive support for GWW’s operational infrastructure, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and enhancing asset performance.

The integration with existing SCADA systems was seamless, requiring no changes to SCADA templates, thus minimising operational disruptions. The TBox LT2’s ease of installation and low power operation proved both cost- and time-efficient, enabling a smooth transition from legacy systems and significantly reducing overall engineering costs.

“Working with Ovarro has always been a pleasure,” said Dinushka Kalutota, Senior Specialist

Operational Technology, GWW. “The TBox LT2 provided an efficient and reliable solution, seamlessly integrating with our existing systems and significantly reducing our engineering costs.”
